For a Canon production print-and-cut workflow, create one closed vector contour in Illustrator, give it the named spot-colour stroke recognized by the RIP, and preserve that vector when exporting. The RIP sends the artwork to the Canon printer and the contour data to the finishing cutter.
The printer and cutter have different jobs
Large-format Canon printers are commonly paired with a separate roll cutter or flatbed finishing table. The RIP coordinates the relationship between the printed graphic, the named contour, and the registration marks. Because shops use different combinations, the RIP configuration determines the exact contour prefix and output steps.
CreateCutline produces a spot-colour path named CutContour, a common starting
convention for ONYX and Caldera workflows.
Manual Canon cutline preparation
- Draw or derive one closed outside vector path.
- Apply the required positive or negative offset.
- Unite disconnected artwork into the intended single contour.
- Remove extra holes, overlaps, and duplicate paths.
- Apply the RIP's named spot colour to the stroke.
- Export PDF or EPS with vector and spot data intact.
- In the RIP, map the contour to the finishing cutter.
- Add the correct registration marks and verify the production preview.
Create the path with CreateCutline
Select the artwork, open CreateCutline, choose the offset, and press Create
Cutline. The plug-in creates one closed vector path on its own top-level
layer, with a CutContour spot-colour stroke. The source art stays untouched.
The finished path remains editable. Map or rename it if the Canon shop's RIP uses a different cut prefix. Registration, nesting, cutter methods, and hardware output remain in the production software.
Check the Canon workflow
- Confirm the path is listed as a separate spot colour.
- Ensure that the contour is excluded from printable ink.
- Verify that the correct cutter is selected in the RIP.
- Keep artwork and contour at identical scale and orientation.
- Add registration marks before printing.
- Test alignment on a small job before using production media.
Canon cutline questions
Does the Canon printer read CutContour itself?
The RIP normally interprets the named vector path and manages the cutter handoff. Check the active RIP configuration rather than relying only on the printer model.
Can CreateCutline create a path from a customer JPG?
Yes. The image remains raster for printing, while the generated contour is an editable vector path.
What if the magenta line prints?
The named spot colour was not recognized as a cut contour. Check its spot status, prefix, and the RIP's contour mapping.
