For a Mutoh print-and-cut workflow, create one closed vector contour in Illustrator, apply the cut-path spot colour expected by the active RIP, and export without flattening that vector or converting the spot colour to CMYK. The RIP and paired cutter then handle registration and output.
Start with the RIP configuration
Mutoh printers are used with different RIP and cutter combinations. The cut
path is normally identified by a named spot colour such as CutContour, but
the configured RIP determines the exact recognized prefix and how the path is
routed to the cutter.
Before preparing a production file, check the contour-cut settings in the RIP. If it uses ONYX or Caldera, see the dedicated ONYX CutContour guide or Caldera CutContour guide.
Manual Mutoh cutline workflow
- Build one closed vector boundary around the complete artwork.
- Apply the desired outside or inside offset.
- Remove duplicate paths, interior holes, and unwanted trace detail.
- Put the contour on a separate layer.
- Create the named spot colour required by the RIP.
- Apply it to the stroke and remove the fill.
- Export PDF, EPS, or the format used by the shop without flattening.
- In the RIP, confirm the contour is cutting data and add the registration workflow used by the paired cutter.
Create the contour with CreateCutline
Select the artwork in Illustrator, choose the offset and smoothing, and press
Create Cutline. The plug-in builds one closed path on a new top-level
Cutline layer, using a spot-colour stroke named CutContour. The source art
is not moved or flattened.
If the RIP expects another contour name, map or rename the generated spot colour before export. CreateCutline creates the path; it does not add cutter registration marks or send the job to hardware.
Check the job before printing
- Confirm the spot colour is listed separately in the RIP.
- Make sure it is mapped as a cut contour and not printable ink.
- Check that the cutter configured in the RIP receives the path.
- Add the correct registration marks before printing.
- Verify scale, orientation, and media compensation.
- Run a small alignment and force test before production.
Mutoh cutline questions
Does the Mutoh printer itself cut the job?
That depends on the production setup. Many workflows print on the Mutoh and cut on a separate plotter. The RIP coordinates the print file, contour, and marks.
Can CreateCutline use a PNG as the source?
Yes. It creates a vector contour from placed raster artwork inside Illustrator.
Why is the cut path printing magenta?
The RIP has not recognized or mapped the spot-colour name. Verify the swatch type, exact prefix, and export settings.
