CalderaRIP recognizes vector contours through named spot-colour strokes. Its default workflow recognizes names beginning with CutContour, then makes those paths available to VisualCUT or the configured finishing device. CreateCutline generates the Illustrator contour before the Caldera production stage.
What Caldera checks
Caldera's troubleshooting guidance calls for a CMYK spot colour with a value, a centered vector stroke, a recognized contour name, and a layer that remains enabled for output. The path must stay on the artboard and survive PDF or EPS export as vector data.
CutContour is recognized by default, while FileMan can be configured to accept other names or wildcard prefixes.
Manual Caldera contour workflow
- Build one closed vector path around the complete artwork.
- Remove the fill and keep a visible centered stroke.
- Create a CMYK spot-colour swatch named
CutContour. - Apply it to the contour and keep the layer enabled.
- Export PDF or EPS without converting spot colours to process.
- Import the file through FileMan.
- Confirm the contour is extracted and is not selected for printing.
- Map it to the appropriate tool in VisualCUT or the cutter driver.
Create the Caldera path with CreateCutline
Select the artwork, choose the offset, and press Create Cutline. The plug-in creates one closed vector path with a CutContour spot-colour stroke on a top-level Cutline layer. It works from vector or raster sources without changing the original artwork.
If the Caldera setup uses another contour prefix or several cut operations, duplicate and map paths after the base contour is created.
Check the Caldera job
- Verify FileMan lists
CutContourunder contours. - Leave the Illustrator layer enabled for export.
- Make sure the stroke is centered and has no special effects.
- Confirm the contour is not checked as printable artwork.
- Check that every named contour maps to the intended tool.
- Add the registration marks required by the finishing device.
Caldera cutline questions
Does CreateCutline replace VisualCUT?
No. It produces the Illustrator geometry. VisualCUT handles finishing-device mapping, marks, and output.
Can Caldera use another contour name?
Yes. FileMan can be configured with other names and wildcard prefixes. The default CutContour output is a common starting point.
Why does Caldera show a cryptic CMYK contour name?
The swatch was probably created as process colour instead of Spot Color.
