How to make a CutContour path in Adobe Illustrator for ONYX

Published

ONYX RIP-Queue identifies a contour from a closed vector path whose spot-colour name uses the prefix configured in the Contour Cutting Quick Set. A common default is CutContour. CreateCutline builds that Illustrator path automatically and leaves ONYX to route it to the selected cutter.

What ONYX expects

ONYX documentation describes a closed vector path with a named spot colour. If the Quick Set uses CutContour as its cutter-path prefix, names such as CutContour, CutContour Kiss, or CutContour Thru can be used for separate cut layers and conditions.

The prefix must match the Quick Set. A process-colour magenta line is not a substitute for a spot colour with the correct name.

Manual ONYX contour workflow

  1. Create one closed vector contour in Illustrator.
  2. Put it on a separate layer and remove its fill.
  3. Create a spot-colour swatch using the prefix configured in RIP-Queue.
  4. Apply that swatch to the path stroke.
  5. Save the file as PDF or EPS with spot colours intact.
  6. Import it into RIP-Queue and confirm the contour is identified.
  7. Use CUT-Server or the configured cutter workflow for marks and output.

Create the ONYX path with CreateCutline

Select the artwork, set the offset, and press Create Cutline. The plug-in creates one closed vector path with a CutContour spot-colour stroke on a new top-level layer. It does not alter the source artwork.

If the ONYX Quick Set uses another prefix, rename or map the swatch before export. For several cut conditions, duplicate the required paths and give them the names mapped in CUT-Server.

Check ONYX before production

  • Confirm the Quick Set's cutter-path prefix.
  • Verify every cut spot appears as a contour layer.
  • Ensure the contour is not printed.
  • Check PDF/EPS export for preserved spot data.
  • Map kiss and thru paths to the correct cutter conditions.
  • Add and verify the cutter's registration workflow.

ONYX cutline questions

Does CreateCutline configure ONYX Quick Sets?

No. It creates the Illustrator path. ONYX configuration and cutter mapping stay in RIP-Queue and CUT-Server.

Can ONYX use several cut paths?

Yes. ONYX CUT-Server can create layers from multiple named spot colours. Confirm the naming convention and priority in the active setup.

Why is the path not recognized?

Check for a wrong prefix, process-colour swatch, open path, or flattened export.
